An ecotone is a living threshold — a place where ecosystems meet, exchange, and create new life. This workshop invites participants to explore the human body as an ecotone: a porous and ever-changing meeting place of elements, stories, and species.
Drawing inspiration from eco-somatic and performative practices rooted in water and land, we will explore how movement, writing, and sensory attunement can awaken our awareness of the delicate equilibrium between inner and outer ecologies. Through somatic explorations, creative writing, collective improvisation, and storytelling, participants are invited to listen to the subtle movements that occur where bodies and landscapes overlap.
Inspired by Sophie Strand’s reflections on the intelligence of the interstitial, we will remember that we are made of cracks and interstices — made of otherness. The body, like the shoreline, is not a fixed boundary but an animate thickness through which life passes, translates, and transforms. In this shared inquiry, we will practice becoming more porous — sensing ourselves as living membranes between water and land, self and world, human and more-than-human.
Our exploration method is Continuum dive – a non-verbal movement meditation guided by the sound-breath and body sensations. The dive embodies the ecology of relation — a practice of balance, permeability, and reverence for the fragile, fertile edges where life begins again.
Class 1, 2.02 — Porosity of the Body and the Holobiont: sensing ourselves as communities of species, open systems in exchange with air, water, and soil.
Class 2, 9.02 — Interstices: exploring the fertile spaces between movement and stillness, self and other, gesture and silence.
Class 3, 16.02 — The Ecotone and the Shape of Meandering: studying flow, transitions, and edges through movement and water-based practice.
Class 4, 23.02 — Ecology of Relations: integrating the experiences through collective writing, storytelling, and performative sharing — a closing ritual honoring the interconnectedness that sustains us.
